Monster Jam Summer Heat
The Monster Jam Summer Heat tour made one of its final stops of the summer season at the beautiful Lake Erie Speedway facility and I finally made my first voyage to a Summer Heat event. The CCE folks assembled a very good looking lineup of monster trucks plus freestyle street bikes and quad wars. I couldn't have picked a better day to catch my final monster truck show before I head back to school.
MONSTER TRUCK LINEUP
-DESTROYER- Dan Evans
-ERADICATOR - Andy Slifco
-GRAVE DIGGER- Randy Brown
-RAP ATTACK- Dave Rappach
-T-MAXX - John Seasock
WHEELIE CONTEST
Rap Attack led the show off. Dave got a pretty good sky wheelie, but definitely let some room for the others with a score of 18.
Next out was John Seasock in T-Maxx. He got the truck standing straight up and walked the truck on two wheels across most of the cars, recieving a 26 from the fan judges.
With a very strong run already by Seasock. Dan Evans, celebrating his 24th anniversary with wife Lorrie, planted the tailgate and walked the Destroyer machine across the cars one-upping T-Maxx with a 27.
Eradicator, looking a little beat up from a rollover on Saturday, was next in line. After two top-notch runs from Seasock and Evans, the bar was already set. Slifco got the front end up nicely but couldn't carry it far resulting in a 19.
Fan favorite Randy Brown in Grave Digger was last in the contest. Set on the victory, Brown throttled the truck and stood it almost straight up in the air, coming down and planting the tailgate in the cars and the truck stood still perfectly vertical for a couple seconds before he walked it across the rest of the set. Well deserving of a perfect 30 and the contest win.
QUALIFYING
The trucks qualified one at a time on the Chicago-style course. Nothing of huge significance to report other than Grave Digger was the top qualifier and T-Maxx nicked a turning pole thus was the slowest.

Monster Jam Summer Heat:
The Monster Jam Summer Heat is an annual monster truck event held in late March at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, NV. It is the championship event of the USHRA Monster Jam series. Each year over 100 trucks compete for the honor of being selected for this event. It consists of racing and freestyle segments, and the winner of each is considered the series champion in that division for the coming year. The freestyle is especially notable as the track layout is typically the most extreme all season, with every obstacle being considered large, and it often produces a multitude of crashes. It is the highest profile monster truck event in the country and draws tremendous media attention as well as criticism from those who dislike its destructive reputation.
Monster Jam Summer Heat:
Because of the large number of events and massive popularity of the series, the list of trucks competing in the series is the longest of any promoter. The most popular trucks, which are usually featured on the television show, come from three primary groups: Trucks (or names) which are owned by Live Nation (such as Grave Digger and Madusa), independents or "privateers" (such as Gun Slinger and Avenger), and "corporate privateers" Monster Jam Summer Heat which are independently owned but sponsored by major companies (such as Bounty Hunter, sponsored by CSK Auto, and T-Maxx, sponsored by Traxxas). As some trucks are owned by Live Nation, a constant criticism is that events have the deck stacked in favor of their trucks, if not completely rigged. There is little evidence to Monster Jam Summer Heat support the claim, however, and Live Nation maintains that events are run fairly.
Fabricators at Digger's Dungeon recently finished the latest in the fleet of Grave Digger trucks: Grave Digger XXI. But this brand new race-ready vehicle won't be driven by Dennis, nor Pablo, nor any of the other Grave Digger drivers. In fact, it will be driven by the most important people in the nearly quarter century history of the team: its fans.
The official Advance Auto Parts Monster Truck Experience featuring Grave Digger will begin visiting Advance Auto Parts locations across the United States in September. Advance Auto Parts customers and Grave Digger fans will have the opportunity to sit in the truck and watch a video that brings an actual freestyle performance to life.
Monster Jam is a series of live events and television show created by Live Nation (formerly Clear Channel Entertainment). The series is sanctioned under the umbrella of the USHRA and takes place primarily in the United States. Although individual event formats can vary greatly based on the "intermission" entertainment, the marque entertainment is always the racing and freestyle competitions by monster trucks. |
