A group of six lucky students in Northern California will soon discover what it's like to learn from one of American Idol's best, associate musical director Michael Orland.  You know Michael from seeing him work with the Idols at the piano when mentors appear on the show, but it's what he does behind the scenes that is truly impressive. The students are from Sonoma State University, and the one-day event will happen at the ROUSTABOUT THEATER, the resident theater company at Wells Fargo Center for the Arts.  The session will go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 28, and $12 tickets will be available for spectators.  A Q & A session will also follow the class. In an article in the Press Democrat, Roustabout Artistic Director talks about how he excited he is to host Michael Orland for the event.  "I know Michael from working in L.A., and I've been thinking about bringing him up for a while," Lewis said. "It gives our students a chance to see what it’s like to work with a working professional." As noted in the Press Democrat, doors open for audience seating at 12:30 p.m. in Room 119 at Ives Hall on the SSU campus, 1801 E. Cotati Ave., and tickets are available. There's no better time to get an update on Kyle Ensley, last year's AI auditioner with gubernatorial aspirations, than election day 2008!  The Oklahoma State University senior was interviewed by The Norman Transcript, and he says he still has lofty career goals: "I have this (Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs) fellowship through the Department of State," Ensley said. "It pays for grad school and it also guarantees a four-year job in the Department of State working as a foreign service officer. After grad school I will be working in an embassy somewhere as a diplomat." Despite his ultimately impressive Top 50 status during last year's tryouts, Kyle says he's not sure he'll try out for American Idol again.  He admits that he never saw himself landing a job in the music industry.  He does say, however, that the recognition he gained from being on the show (and even creating some controversy between Simon and Paula) might affect his political aspirations: "Some people know who I am already," Ensley said. "I guess they know to watch out for me later. I hope it helps more than it hurts." One person who was definitely in his corner during auditions was Simon Cowell, and Kyle says Simon even told him off the air that he wished he had advanced. "Even though I knew I was leaving, I left on a good note with him. At least I was never really that embarrassed by him or he never really said anything that mean. As long as I had his approval, that meant a lot to me. I knew I still could make it." Although he lost out on securing one of the last Top 24 spots to Colton Berry, Kyle walked away with a good friend from the whole experience--season seven winner David Cook.  They flew out from Tulsa together and have remained in touch ever since.  David even secured tickets for Kyle for the American Idols LIVE!
