Despite the commercial success, the critical reaction to X&Y was less unanimous in its praise than the reviews for its predecessor, with New York Times critic Jon Pareles describing them as "the most insufferable band of the decade." Defying renewed rumours of a band breakup and Chris Martin's marriage to Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow, Coldplay's third album found them in fine form. Press comparisons to U2 among the rock elite became commonplace.
