Reznor manipulates everything from ripples of feedback to vocal harmonies in order to serve mood and atmosphere. The result is somewhat cinematic, creating aural movies that evoke images ranging from black and bleak ("Somewhat Damaged," "Starfuckers, Inc.," "No You Don't") to graceful and haunting ("La Mer," "The Great Below"). At the center of the album are clamorous pop songs like "The Day the World Went Away" and the album's first single "We're In This Together," both of which highlight The Fragile's marked melodic bent.
Broken debuted at Number Seven on the pop albums chart, while "Wish," a track from the record, won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Reznor tested the freedom granted by Nine Inch Nails tour's new record company on the video for "Happiness in Slavery," which showed a man being sexually tortured and ground into a pulp by a machine - a visualization of NIN's own tortured nature as a synth band venting human emotions and an apt metaphor for Reznor's feelings about the music business. This was not the first controversial NIN video: "Sin," from the first album, was refused by MTV for its images of genital piercing and gay men smearing blood on each other, while outtakes from "Down in It" were investigated by the FBI, which suspected that they were culled from a snuff film.
The September 14, 2007 edition of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported that the September 18 show in Honolulu, Hawaii would be the last performance of the current incarnation of the Nine Inch Nails tour tickets live band. Trent Reznor was quoted as stating, "at this point, I want to switch things around a bit. Nine Inch Nails tour as a rock band configuration, we've done it and we've done it again. I see other ways I can present the material in concert, more challenging, something new. I don't want it to go stale."
