The franchise originated in 1882 as a charter member of the now-defunct 19th Century major league called the American Association. The name "Reds" was inspired by a previous, unrelated club called the Cincinnati Red Stockings, recognized as the first openly professional baseball team. The current Reds joined the National League in 1890 after spending its first eight years in the Association. The Reds are managed by Dusty Baker, a former star major league player who has been a successful manager for the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago Cubs. Since 2003, the Reds have played their home games in Great American Ball Park, a baseball-only facility built next door to their previous home, Cinergy Field. The Reds have enjoyed sporadic success over their 125-plus years. They won the AA's inaugural season in 1882, and did not win another championship until 1919. They were also competitive in the late 1930s, and from the late 1950s well into the 1970s. Their most recent World Series championship came in 1990.

Cincinnati Reds News

Harang stumbles as Reds break streak
Reds starter Aaron Harang was a victim of control problems, and was victimized by two Cubs home runs in a 7-3 loss in Tuesday's series opener at Wrigley Field.

Jocketty remains quiet about trade plans
With his club only four games under .500 entering Tuesday, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty hasn't publicly indicated whether his team would be buyers or sellers.

Brennaman given security in Chicago
Chicago's public enemy No. 1 arrived without fanfare at Wrigley Field on Tuesday afternoon, expecting less than fair treatment later from the Cubs' faithful.

Knee surgery ends Gonzalez's season
Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez had season-ending microfracture surgery on his left knee Monday. He's expected to be ready for Spring Training next season.

Dickerson helps club beyond the field
Chris Dickerson has become a pioneer of sorts. He has always been an advocate of recycling. When he saw the number of bottles the United States goes through, the first thing he thought was how much plastic is used in the clubhouse.

Mailbag: Who should be leadoff hitter?
Who in the Reds lineup should be leading off and why? Why wasn't Brandon Phillips in the top five among second basemen in All Star balloting? What's the deal with Ryan Freel? Beat reporter Mark Sheldon answers these questions and more in this week's mailbag.

Reds hold off Nats to secure sweep
Adam Dunn hit a three-run blast in the fourth inning and Edinson Volquez recovered from a shaky start, as the Reds completed a four-game sweep of the Nationals with a 6-5 victory at Great American Ball Park on Sunday.

Volquez named to All-Star staff
In just a half of a season, Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez went from relative unknown to National League All-Star. Volquez was named the Reds' lone representative at the July 15 All-Star Game in New York.

Baker tries not to overwork relievers
Dusty Baker isn't a fan of using his relievers more than two days in a row, a philosophy he adopted early in his managerial career. But the Reds manager knows "sometimes you've got to do stuff you don't like to do."

Fogg, Phillips deliver win for Reds
Brandon Phillips hit a walk-off RBI single into left field off reliever Luis Ayala to give the Reds a 3-2 victory over the Nationals at Great American Ball Park on Saturday night.

Phillips also getting it done with glove
Brandon Phillips is riding the longest errorless streak of his career on a Reds team enjoying one of its better defensive stretches of the season. The Cincinnati second baseman hasn't committed an error in 76 games.

Reds' solid defense is key to winning
Ken Griffey Jr.'s homer, Brandon Phillips' big base hit and solid pitching from Bronson Arroyo drew the credit for Cincinnati's three wins during the current homestand. But overlooked in the Reds' last five games has been the play of their defense.

Cabrera recovery ahead of schedule
Jolbert Cabrera's dislocated index finger is recovering quickly, and the Reds infielder expects to begin a rehab assignment early next week.

No rain on Arroyo's parade
After what he called "the worst outing of his career" last week in Toronto, Bronson Arroyo has posted two of his better starts of the season, the latest coming Friday, as he shut down the Nationals and led the Reds to a 3-0 victory.

Fogg eyes redemption in return to Reds
Josh Fogg was set to return from the 15-day disabled list within the next week and take the mound July 12 at Milwaukee, but his start was moved up to Saturday after scheduled starter Aaron Harang began feeling stiffness in his right forearm.

Reds lose Hopper for season
Norris Hopper will undergo season-ending reconstructive surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday after an MRI revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Reds join in welcoming back veterans
Wecome Back Veterans was created by New York Mets chairman and chief executive officer Fred Wilpon and a group of private citizens. Supported by Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Advanced Media and the McCormick Foundation, the goal of Welcome Back Veterans is to raise $100 million and provide 100,000 job opportunities for veterans.

B. Phillips shines as Reds top Nationals
Brandon Phillips hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to help the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Nationals on Thursday night.

Capable bats complicate starting lineup
With a team loaded with capable hitters, manager Dusty Baker has a hard time playing both Jerry Hairston Jr. and Jeff Keppinger regularly. While the sluggers complicate a manager's job, the Reds hope they will make taking Game 2 of a four-game set against the Nationals easier.
