The season opener against Delaware this weekend is more than the usual early-season tune-up against a lower-conference opponent. It's an early referendum on what may be the most controversial decision of the Ralph Friedgen era. Friedgen anointed senior Jordan Steffy as his starting quarterback over returning starter Chris Turner and Florida transfer Josh Portis. Steffy, considered a great practice player, has struggled with both injuries and ineffectiveness when he's seen the field in games.    The Terrapins earned their fifth bowl game invite in the last seven years in 2007, but a loss in the Emerald Bowl also left the team with a 6-7 record and its third losing season in four years. That helped lead to an offseason of change in College Park.    The biggest change is that head coach Ralph Friedgen turned over the offense to James Franklin. For the previous two years, Friedgen had served as both head coach and offensive coordinator, an approach that wasn't working. Franklin, who coached the receivers at Maryland earlier in the Friedgen era, returns to install a modified West Coast offense designed to improve a unit that averaged a pedestrian 24 points per game a year ago and tended to have to grind out extended drives in order to reach paydirt....

At Maryland, it's Quarterback Controversy II
Jordan Steffy worked all summer to earn the job as Maryland's starting quarterback, and now a thumb injury is threatening to end his reign atop the depth chart after only one game. Steffy hurt his right thumb in the second half of Saturday's 14-7 win over Delaware, a game in which coach Ralph Friedgen also used Chris Turner and Josh Portis at quarterback.

Apart from the familiar red, white and black uniforms, it may be hard to recognize Maryland when play resumes in September. The squad that finished 6-7 after an Emerald Bowl loss in 2007 is undergoing major schematic changes on offense, defense and special teams. Head coach Ralph Friedgen relinquished control of the offense during the offseason, hiring James Franklin as the offensive coordinator. The result is more of a West Coast attack that will feature more focus on the receiving corps and take advantage of the Terps' speed in the slot and in the backfield. A familiar face will likely be under center, but which face that will be remained unsettled at the end of spring ball.

Jordan Steffy was picked to start at quarterback for Maryland in the season opener against Delaware by coach Ralph Friedgen on Monday. Steffy lost his starting job last season when he left the fifth game of the season, against Rutgers, with a concussion. Chris Turner took over, guided the Terrapins into the Emerald Bowl and entered summer practice as the favorite to beat out Steffy and Josh Portis.

Scott runs for 197 yards, Maryland edges Delaware
Maryland's effort to generate some offense against Delaware included using three quarterbacks, all of whom were most effective when handing the ball to Da'Rel Scott. Scott ran for 197 yards in his first college start, and Maryland overcame a lackluster passing game to escape with a 14-7 victory Saturday.
