June Jones starts over again, this time at SMU
June Jones pulls out a digital camera from his desk drawer and shows off the million-dollar view from his condominium in Hawaii: Kahala Beach to one side and the volcanic crater of Diamond Head to the other. "Not bad," Jones said. Nearly eight months after surprising the college football world by leaving Hawaii to coach SMU, Jones doesn't have any pretty pictures of smoggy Dallas.

Southern Methodist Team Report
SMU has 13 true freshmen on its two-deep roster, or about 25 percent of the 56 players listed on offense, defense and special teams. That includes quarterbacks Bo Levi Mitchell and Braden Smith, who bumped previous starter Justin Willis down to No. 3.
But just because new head coach June Jones is clearly building for the future, it doesn't mean the Mustangs are writing off 2008.
"We're trying to win games," Jones said. "We'll put the best guys out there that I think give us the best chance to win."
Mitchell, who will start the opener at Rice, passed for 2,451 yards, 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions last season at Class 5A state champion Katy (Texas) High. Smith completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 2,880 yards, 26 touchdown and just three picks as a...

Southern Methodist Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
A year ago at this time, SMU appeared to be a realistic candidate for a winning season, a bowl game and a possible run at the C-USA West title. Instead, the Mustangs collapsed under the weight of numerous injuries and finished 1-11, leading to a coaching change.
Outgoing coach Phil Bennett insisted the Mustangs were a lot closer than they appeared to be last fall. Now new coach June Jones, fresh off a successful run at Hawaii that led to a Sugar Bowl appearance last season, becomes the fifth SMU coach to take a shot at turning the program around since the NCAA hit the program with the death penalty in 1987.
"I think from skill-level players, we're better at SMU," Jones said.
