Hawaii Warriors News

Hawaii Team Report
Senior quarterback Tyler Graunke will start Saturday at Oregon State—an unlikely turn of events considering his offseason. Graunke was suspended from winter conditioning in March and held out of fall camp—both to resolve unspecified academic issues. The Honolulu Advertiser reported that Graunke was academically eligible, but the Warriors were ready to play without him because he didn't meet coach Greg McMackin's standards. "We moved on," McMackin told the Advertiser. "Basically, he was not going to play this season." Graunke met McMackin's requirements by the start of the fall semester and rejoined the team the week of the opener against Florida, but he did not travel.

Hawaii Team Report
The Warriors' difficult schedule begins with their biggest challenge of the year.   Hawaii opens Saturday at No. 5 Florida, which is led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow.   The Warriors left Tuesday for an all-day trip to Atlanta, where they are scheduled to practice at Georgia Tech for two days. They'll move to Gainesville, Fla., on Friday.   The Gators are the first of four BCS-conference opponents for the Warriors. Hawaii got a taste of what this game will be like last year in a 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.   "We have a challenging game and a challenging schedule, but we've had a good camp," first-year Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said.

Hawaii Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
The race for one of the most glamorous jobs in college sports—Hawaii quarterback—was a dead heat at the end of spring ball. Senior Tyler Graunke, who was the backup last year, and mobile junior Inoke Funaki battled through the spring. Junior-college transfers Brent Rausch and Greg Alexander join the race in the fall. Funaki was 12-of-18 for 145 yards and two touchdowns with two carries for 45 yards in the spring game. Graunke was 10-of-14 for 180 yards and a touchdown with an interception. "They are sliced," coach Greg McMackin told the Honolulu Advertiser. "Nobody is ahead." Graunke returned to compete for the job after being suspended from the team for most of the winter.

Hawaii Team Report
The Warriors believe they played their way back into the WAC title race by upsetting Fresno State on the road last week. It was their first win over a Top 25 team on the road.    Hawaii, the defending league champion, will find out where it stands quickly. A promising Louisiana Tech team comes to Hawaii this week, then the Warriors travel to league favorite Boise State on a short week.    "I think we're in the thick of things now," Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said. "Anybody can win the WAC because I don't believe anyone is going to go through undefeated."    The Hawaii coaching staff has tweaked the offense to take advantage of the mobility of undersized quarterback Inoke Funaki, who has emerged as the starter.

Hawaii Team Report
Gone are quarterback Colt Brennan, his four outstanding wide receivers and offensive mastermind June Jones. In are linebackers Adam Leonard and Solomon Elimimian and defensive mastermind Greg McMackin. "Defense is going to be the face of the team, and rightfully so," Elimimian said. "We have to step up on defense." The Warriors, known for years for their high-flying passing attack, must rebuild in 2008 following a whirlwind 2007 that saw them go undefeated in the regular season and lose to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and a tumultuous '08 that rocked the program. Jones left, athletic director Herman Frazier was fired and wide receivers Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullen turned pro a year early. "It was crazy how it all went down," Elimimian said.

Graunke leads Hawaii over Weber State
Tyler Graunke threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns in the second half to rally Hawaii to a 36-17 victory over Weber State tonight. The Warriors avoided being upset by the Football Championship Subdivision Wildcats by scoring the final 29 points, including 22 points in the third quarter. With Hawaii trailing 17-7, Graunke replaced starter Inoke Funaki to open the second half and provided the...
