Buckeyes' special teams not so special last fall
It's a statistic that rankles Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, a man not easily rankled. His Buckeyes were dead last in the Big Ten a year ago in kickoff returns and he's determined that won't happen again. So Wednesday's kick scrimmage at Ohio Stadium took on particular importance. Asked at the start of August workouts if he were giving special attention to special teams, Tressel said, "Absolutely.

The divide between Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten doesn't appear to be closing anytime soon. The divide between Ohio State and a national championship? That remains to be seen. The Buckeyes return an overwhelming amount of experience—18 starters from a team that has won three-straight Big Ten titles and is looking for four. Few around the league seem to have the firepower to stop them. Tailback Beanie Wells is a Heisman favorite and James Laurinaitis is perhaps the best linebacker in the country for an Ohio State team that is 22-2 over the last three years in the Big Ten and 66-11 overall since 2002. That does little, though, to slow detractors tired of seeing the Buckeyes get trounced in the national championship game.

Another big game, another disappointing performance for Ohio State. Beanie Wells, who had to sit out with that injured right toe, wouldn't have helped the Buckeyes in their 35-3 thrashing at the hands of USC. The defense wasn't fast enough to keep up with the Trojans, and the offense couldn't protect Todd Boeckman. If anything, the defeat signaled the start of the Terrelle Pryor era. Boeckman, a senior, is in no danger of losing the starting job to a freshman in Pryor, but Boeckman's playing time is about to get reduced. Pryor looked good during his snaps, rotating within the same series with Boeckman to try and throw the Trojans off-balance. The plan, actually, seemed to work.
