Unhappy with his team's lack of drive, desire and overall competitiveness in an Oct. 18 loss to the Boston Bruins, coach Craig Hartsburg demanded change and revamped his forward lines. The results weren't immediately positive. The Senators had just three shots on goal in the first period of Wednesday's loss to the Florida Panthers. But they were much better from there on in, outshooting their visitors by a 39-10 margin in the final 40 minutes. "I saw in the second and third period the team we want to be," said Hartsburg. "This is a process, what we're trying to do here. But I did see something." The defeat was the Senators' second in succession and third in their last four games.

Alfredsson signs 4-year deal with Ottawa
The Ottawa Senators tickets re-signed captain Daniel Alfredsson to a 4-year contact Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Ottawa Sun reported it was worth $22 million. The 35-year-old Alfredsson has 334 goals and 856 points in 861 career regular-season games with the Senators. He has spent his entire career with Ottawa and served as the team's captain since 1999.

Whenever Daniel Alfredsson has been out with an injury in the past, the Ottawa Senators tickets have struggled. It's a situation they'll need to remedy if forced to wait a little longer for him to return after knee surgery. Alfredsson had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last Friday to remove a bone chip and was expected to be out two weeks.

Senators' Ruutu suspended 2 games for elbowing
Ottawa Senators tickets forward Jarkko Ruutu was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Wednesday for catching Montreal's Maxim Lapierre with an elbow. Ruutu received a two-minute penalty for charging in the third period of the Canadiens' 4-0 win Tuesday night. He will forfeit almost $14,000 in salary and will sit out a home-and-home series against the New York Islanders.
